Neither Shane nor Roman reappeared that afternoon. Holly remained sequestered in her own room, not bothering to answer the door when I knocked.

After a lonely dinner, where I picked at a biscuit with tea and avoided the tables where I’d seen the asylum spirits writhing around, I wandered back to my room.

I bit back a groan as I yanked a fluttering sheet of white paper off the door. The writing was a bubbly feminine scrawl.

I’d forgotten my skeleton key in the room, dazed by my lack of sleep, and now Daphne had it. I jiggled the knob ineffectually, rested my forehead on the door, and let out a sigh.

I didn’t have the energy to spare to fight with Daphne through the door and I wanted to be alone, anyways. My brain felt like it was packed to the brim, swirling with information that seemed to change on the daily. It was long past time to sit down and sort out my thoughts.

The library was my next choice, and luckily for me, it was deserted. I dropped my satchel next to an overstuffed leather sofa and dragged two dusty chunks of wood from a log rack to the side, dropping them into the cold grate of the fireplace.

Sliding the rowan wand from my jacket lining, I took a deep breath and reached inside, nudging the lid off my mental box. The wildfire crackled happily, specks of golden flame leaping like little fish in my mind’s eye.

I took the tiniest speck of flame and channeled it through my body to my fingertips, where it warmed the rowan wand and burst out as a spark.

Within seconds the wood was blazing away, and I hurriedly dragged another log on, but it too was consumed within seconds. I was left staring at a pile of smoking black ash only moments later.

No wonder I was so destructive. Wildfire simply didn’t behave like normal witchfire; I couldn’t create witchlights or even start a fire that wouldn’t consume its fuel source in seconds.

I found an old box of matches and started the fire the old-fashioned, magic-free way, then settled on the sofa with my textbook and notes.

With the flickering warmth of the fire washing over me, I barely noticed my eyelids drooping. Every muscle in my body relaxed as I slumped on the arm of the sofa, cushioned on my notebook.

The dream started innocently enough.

Vines grew and bloomed over the shelves, bright flowers bursting into bloom as saplings broke through the parquet floor and shot high overhead, piercing the ceiling as they grew. Within moments the library had become a forest, pale glowing fairy lights drifting through the air around me. Tiny books flapped through the air like butterflies.

I moved through the room like the air was syrup, reaching out to catch a butterfly-book on my hand.

“Lucrezia.”

Locke’s rich tones echoed through the forest-library. I leaned over the railing with a smile. The vampire lounged on a chaise of moss and velvet. Thick waves
